Welcome to the EGEODE portal
Geocluster, the leading industry seismic processing solution, is the first industrial application successfully running on the Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) Grid Production Service, within the Expanding GEOsciences on DEmand (EGEODE) Virtual Organisation (VO). EGEODE is dedicated to research in geoscience for both public and private industrial research & development and academic laboratories. read more

EGEODE usage overview in EGEE infrastructure

Overview: EGEODE is an initiative to create a VO dedicated to research in Geosciences for both industrial R&D and Academic Labs. This presentation will explain the main benefits of this Grid Computing emerging technology for geosciences. Then it will introduce EGEODE VO, give an overview of all applications already ported on the Grid infrastructure and running on this VO. It will detail the usage made by several laboratories and explain why it solve some of the problems they are usually facing.
Analysis: Finding new oilfields, monitoring resource recovery and practicing sustainable development are all complex tasks. Worldwide collaboration, huge computing power, continuing innovation and cutting-edge geosciences software require large financial investments. Building huge processing centers is an industrial challenge in itself. It is difficult for small laboratories to make the required investments. In addition, if two geophysicists/researchers presently working in different locations were required to work together on the same geosciences project, one of them would have to move to a new location. To improve how they carry out their day-to-day tasks, geophysicists/researchers have some fundamental requirements: • Access to state-of-the-art geosciences software. • Potential to process seismic data in a shorter timeframe. • Ability to collaborate with colleagues on the same project, regardless of their physical location.
Impact: Modern seismic data processing and geophysical simulations require greater amounts of computing power, data storage and sophisticated software. The research community hardly keeps pace with this evolution, resulting in difficulties for small or medium research centers to exploit their innovative algorithms. Grid Computing is an opportunity to foster sharing of computer resources and give access to large computing power for a limited period of time at an affordable cost, as well as sharing data and sophisticated software. The capability to solve new complex problems and validate innovative algorithms on real scale problems is also a way to attract and keep the brightest researchers for the benefit of both the academic and industrial R&D geosciences communities. Many typical Grid Computing projects target pure Research domains in infrastructure, middleware and usage. EGEODE moves the focus towards collaboration between Industry and Academia.
Conclusions: Grid Computing is an opportunity to foster sharing of computer resources and to give access to large computing power at an affordable cost. EGEODE VO is the solution proposed to geophysicists who are working in research laboratories and need to access to the seismic processing generic platform. They are very satisfied with this new way of process their data. The perspectives either in terms of new developments or in terms of new users that will join the VO in a near future are very promising.
